A Christmas Karen
Back in 2018 when the world was round and hugging was a thing, Good Wolf and Phoenix Players joined forces to devise a play called The Ashes about London during the Blitz.
In 2019 we followed it up with Hidden Stories, about a family of our devising, interspersed with verbatim extracts of interviews we had conducted.
Then in 2020 we were lucky enough to get Lottery Funding for the next show. The day before Lockdown…
So, we had to stop devising our tea-break inspired show and went online instead to play and improvise and write. Which led to our first audio play, Tales of a Teapot, in the summer. And we had so much fun doing it we made one for winter too!
Taking A Christmas Carol as our inspiration, 17 of us came together to workshop ideas, stories and characters, which five of the group turning into the script for: A Christmas Karen.
We’ve been listening to Christmas songs and making decorations since September and now the end of the year is nigh and here comes the show!

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house
Not a creature was stirring…
…except four ghosts and Karen. And Karen’s pretty sure these ghosts aren’t even meant for her. But they’re not going to let that stop them.
In our latest COVID-friendly venture Phoenix and The Wolf have taken Charles Dickens (and maybe just a pinch of Muppet) as our inspiration. Using A Christmas Carol as the starting point for online workshops and improvisation the team has written and produced an original 2020 take on his most well-loved tale. Funny, moving and with just a little bit of seasonal magic – we can’t wait to share our latest adventure-in-sound with you!
